Why Every UAE SME Needs an Employee Handbook (And What to Include)

Most UAE SMEs run on a mix of verbal understanding and scattered messages instead of a written employee handbook — and it works fine, until a dispute forces someone to prove what the policy actually was.

It's your first line of defence in a dispute

When a disagreement over leave, conduct, or termination escalates, the business with a signed, dated handbook that the employee acknowledged resolves it faster and with far less exposure than the business relying on memory.

It should reflect UAE law, not a template from elsewhere

A handbook copied from an international template or a generic online source often contradicts UAE Labour Law on leave, working hours, or disciplinary process — creating a document that actively works against you.

What belongs in it

At minimum: working hours and attendance, leave policy, code of conduct, disciplinary procedure, grievance process, and end-of-employment terms — each written in language an employee actually understands and can be held to.

It needs a signature, not just a distribution

A handbook that was emailed but never formally acknowledged carries far less weight than one every employee has signed as part of onboarding.

Most UAE SMEs don't have a handbook that would hold up if tested. Ask EvolvedHR about building yours correctly, from the ground up.
